We had a chat with recruitment team member Steph Curley, so that you can get to know her a little better!
Tell us what your role on the team is, where you're from and how you got involved with TFNZ?
I work as the Recruitment and Selection Manager for Teach First NZ. This means I get to do the fun work of recruiting on campus as well as interviewing great candidates!
I was raised in the small town of Martinborough in the Wairarapa. This has given me a lifelong love for time spent in the outdoors, but I also admit, a lifetime of scrapes and bruises as I am always exploring outdoor pursuits. I say "pursuits" rather than "skills" as it is where I get the bruises from!
I got involved with Teach First NZ after 2 years working as a solicitor. I saw Teach First NZ were looking for a new member of the recruitment team. One coffee with Teach First NZ later and I knew I had to be involved!
Why do you think that this work is so important?
It is devastating to me that in Aotearoa, New Zealand a person does not have choices about what they want to do in their life simply because they never had access to a fair education.
I believe the biggest thing you can give to a young person is opportunity. The opportunity to explore what makes them passionate and choose the kind of things they want to do in their life. A good and fair education might seem like a basic right, but thousands of our young people have not had the opportunity to access a good and fair education.
Our participants work to inspire, challenge and uplift in our schools and wider community to ensure opportunity is available to all young people in New Zealand, so that they all have choices about what their life might look like.
What is your top tip for people interested in applying for TFNZ?
Be interested, be open and be genuine! We love candidates who are open to learning and interested in learning more about themselves and their potential for impact!
