Launch of the Teach First NZ community

News items - 4 December 2012

On the evening of Monday 3rd December 2012, Teach First NZ was proud to celebrate the launch of its community, with the support of over two hundred individuals gathered at the Faculty of Engineering of The University of Auckland.

The evening began with invited guests arriving for drinks and canapes. Guests were then invited to enter Neon Foyer Lecture Theatre, where the main programme took place.

The programme opened with a moving rendition of 'Lean On Me', sung by the Mangere College Gospel Choir. Carol Hirschfeld, MC for the evening and Teach First NZ Trustee, welcomed those in attendance and introduced Deborah George, Founding Chair of Teach First NZ, as the opening speaker. Shaun Sutton, Chief Executive of Teach First NZ, and Associate Professor Graeme Aitken, Dean of Education at The University of Auckland, both then were invited to speak. Beatrice Faumuina ONZM, concluded the evening with her keynote address.

Throughout the event, three participants from Teach First NZ's inaugural cohort also shared their 'participant diaries' of the first few weeks of the Summer Initial Intensive.

Many thanks to our partners and supporters who together have made the launch of Teach First NZ possible.
