Cris Cucerzan, 2014 Cohort (English): A poem

Voices - 14 July 2015

Cris Cucerzan is from our 2014 cohort and teaches English at Aorere College. Inspired by his surroundings and experience at Ōrākei Marae during the Teach First NZ Mid-Year Intensive, he wrote this poem after staying the night.

verbs: experience, listen, experience, connect, mauri

having my surfaces blown by the wind
then quietly settle to a hush alongside

the earth grass richly wet
with tears that didn’t fall yesterday

the glass of the sun
spilling across the whenua
like an accident meant to be

the wind again
able to spiral into my ear
like a gleeful child on a slide

green knuckles broken through moana
in silent triumph
