This year’s Summer Initial Intensive (SII) kicked off with a pōwhiri, at Tūtahi Tonu Marae, located on the University of Auckland’s Epsom Campus, to welcome our twenty 2015 cohort members and their whānau to the Teach First NZ journey.
The SII is the first chunk of the Teach First NZ programme, where participants live and learn together for eight weeks over the summer. The SII is delivered in partnership with the Faculty of Education at the University of Auckland and the aim is to develop the skills and knowledge required to best prepare participants for the classroom. The participants are also introduced to the ongoing coursework that continues over the two years.
In the first week of SII, our participants took part in a noho marae, where they were given the opportunity to get to know each other better and bond as a cohort. Other key activities that make up the SII are time in schools, a leadership development strand and a mini ‘summer school’ teaching practicum in January.
For the 2015 intake, we had over 230 applications for 20 places. We have 5 Māori participants, (our highest yet per cohort) 4 of whom are teaching Te Reo. We also have 7 STEM and 8 English teachers.
